Biosensing technology and global system for long-term research and integrated management of ecosystems


This project is an interdisciplinary research begun in the Biosense Center, University of Novi Sad, and supported through a number of FP7 projects, and extends them to the entire territory of Serbia through the development of more highly instrumented sites for monitoring natural (terrestrial and aquatic) and anthropogenically altered (agricultural, forest, urban) ecosystems.
Besides the new results and products in a particular scientific fields (ICT, NT, ecology, forestry, agriculture, public health, economics, law), the project will be through the direct collaboration of scientists from different fields to enable the establishment of GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) portal Serbia and its inclusion in the World Group for Earth observation GEO, as well as provide new insight into the behaviour of different ecosystems. Essentially interdisciplinary approach to research will enable the development of expert systems for decision support and integrated ecosystem management, with the ultimate aim to assist and enhance decision making processes and contribute to the harmony of national legislation with the EU legislation in the field of ecosystem management, agriculture and public health.
The project has been divided into 7 phases:

  1. Ecosystem monitoring
  2. Nuclear analytical techniques for biosensing
  3. Sensors, wireless sensor networks (WSN) and remote sensing for biosensing
  4. The development of high-instrumented sites (VIS) Serbia for continuous environmental research
  5. GEOSS portal, management and data analysis
  6. Integrated management systems, socio-economic aspects and improvement of country decision making
  7. Dissemination

Main responsibilities of BioSense Center are:

  • Design of specific sensors for use in monitoring of natural and human-altered ecosystems
  • The development of devices for WSN (node devices, gateways, electronically steerable antennas, RF front-end …)
  • The development of energy-efficient communication protocol for WSN
  • The integration of the protocol stack for WSN
  • The development of new methods remote sensing for use in ecosystem monitoring (radar, radiometer, Lidar, multi-disciplinary, thermal, polarization camera)
  • Development of methods of assessment of pollution of urban-based video traffic surveillance
  • The integration and implementation of the developed methods and biosensing devices in selected pilot sites for highly instrumented ecosystem monitoring in Serbia
  • Establishment of a system for continuous monitoring and ecological research in selected locations, based on the developed biosensing technologies
