Besides life, health, property and car insurance services, Generali Insurance Serbia offers agricultural insurance facing challenges along the way. These challenges are primarily related to the access and identification of precise location of the insured agricultural parcels upon the occurrence of the damage, the organization of the assessor&#8217;s field trips, as well as the calculation of the damage in the optimal time frame.

In order to overcome these challenges, and at the request of the client, BioSense has developed multifunctional and innovative platforms SmartAgro for agricultural insurance management, which allows easy management of claims and policies via both web and mobile application.

BioSense has excellent ties with the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture and Provincial Secretariat for Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of Vojvodina. We are providing a range of solutions that help public administration get a better insight into agricultural production, achieve more efficient control of the subsidies and detect irresponsible use of farmland.
&nbsp;
Our solutions are mainly based on remote sensing and GIS and involve large databases of fields, farmers and acquired data. Services such as crop mapping over the region of interest are developed using Sentinel 2 satellite images and come at a 10m resolution. Crop mapping, in particular, has various purposes, from verification of subsidies to identifying burning of the fields or illegal occupation of state-owned farmland.
&nbsp;
Subsidies are issued for growing particular crops, constructing greenhouses or installing irrigation systems. They are numerous and in-person inspections would require large teams of government officials. Furthermore, it is very time-consuming to check the whole field, which can be tens or hundreds of hectares in size. Using our system, verifications are done remotely, using satellite image processing coupled with advanced machine learning algorithms.
&nbsp;
Similar technology is employed for detection of illegal activities. Traditionally, farmers had often burnt crop residues on their fields to save time and fuel needed for ploughing. This practice was abandoned in the past decades and was declared illegal, as it poses danger to humans and the environment. Also, there have been instances of occupation of state-owned farmland without bidding and paying for the rent. These and other offences are detected using satellite technology and have decreased in occurrence, thus securing safer and more eco-friendly farming, as well as higher revenues for the government.

Other services include systems set up for various other public stakeholders, most notably for extension services. Extension services give advisory support to farmers and collect large amounts of field data. A dedicated platform based on AgroSense was set up where all the data is stored and visualised using a GIS engine. In this way, thousands of new records, as well as the historical database of field observation were digitised and gathered under one roof.

Policy makers

BioSens ima odličnu saradnju sa Ministarstvom poljoprivrede Republike Srbije i Pokrajinskim sekretarijatom za poljoprivredu, vodoprivredu i šumarstvo Vojvodine. Za njih smo razvili brojna rešenja koja pomažu javnoj upravi da stekne bolji uvid u poljoprivrednu proizvodnju, postigne efikasniju kontrolu subvencija i otkrije neodgovorno korišćenje poljoprivrednog zemljišta.

Naša rešenja se uglavnom baziraju na daljinskom istraživanju i GIS-u i uključuju velike baze podataka o poljima, poljoprivrednicima i prikupljenim podacima. Usluge poput mapiranja useva u regionu od interesa razvijaju se pomoću satelitskih snimaka Sentinel 2 i imaju rezoluciju od 10m. Mapiranje useva ima različite svrhe, od verifikacije subvencija do identifikovanja paljenja polja ili ilegalnog zauzimanja državnog poljoprivrednog zemljišta.

Subvencije se daju za uzgoj određenih useva, izgradnju staklenika ili instaliranje sistema za navodnjavanje. One su brojne, a za inspekciju i proveru pravilnog korišćenja svake ponaosob, potrebni su veliki timovi državnih službenika. Takođe, provera celog polja koje može biti veliko desetine ili stotine hektara zahteva mnogo vremena. Zahvaljujući sistemu koji smo razvili, verifikacije se vrše na daljinu, uz satelitsku obradu slika zajedno sa naprednim algoritmima mašinskog učenja.
&nbsp;
Slična tehnologija se koristi za otkrivanje ilegalnih aktivnosti. Tradicionalno, poljoprivrednici su često spaljivali ostatke useva na svojim poljima kako bi uštedeli vreme i gorivo potrebno za oranje. Ova praksa se ne primenjuje proteklih decenija i proglašena je ilegalnom, jer predstavlja opasnost za ljude i životnu sredinu. Takođe, bilo je slučajeva zauzimanja poljoprivrednog zemljišta u državnom vlasništvu bez nadmetanja i plaćanja zakupnine. Ovi i drugi prekršaji otkriveni su satelitskom tehnologijom i njihov obim je smanjen, čime se osigurava sigurnija i ekološki prihvatljivija poljoprivreda, kao i veći prihodi vlade.

Ostale usluge uključuju sisteme postavljene za razne druge javne aktere, a posebno za savetodavne usluge. Savetodavne usluge pružaju savetodavnu podršku poljoprivrednicima i prikupljaju velike količine podataka na terenu. Postavljena je namenska platforma zasnovana na AgroSense-u gde se svi podaci čuvaju i vizualizuju pomoću GIS mehanizma. Na taj način su hiljade novih zapisa, kao i istorijska baza podataka posmatranja na terenu digitalizovane i prikupljene pod jednim krovom.

Državna uprava

Plant-O-Meter is a device that enables the assessment of the physiological condition of plants, which is essential for the care and better development. The human eye can only notice certain changes on the plants (shriveled leaves, yellow and brown leaves, spots on the plant…), but then it may be too late for the plant. Plant-O-Meter notices changes even before they become visible, analyzes and evaluates how healthy the plant is, i.e. what is the ability of photosynthesis, whether there is a need for fertilization and irrigation. The device emits light from carefully selected parts of the spectrum that is reflected by the plant and provides a precise assessment of its condition in just a few seconds. The data is sent via a Bluetooth connection to the smartphone to which the device is connected, through which it is further transferred to the information system together with the GPS location of the sample. Also, the device is designed to display measurement results regardless of the time of day and weather conditions.

Plant-O-Meter

Plant-O-Meter je uređaj koji omogućava procenu fiziološkog stanja biljaka, od suštinske važnosti za negu i bolji razvoj. Ljudsko oko može da primeti samo određene promene na biljkama (sparušeni listovi, žuti i braon listovi, pege na biljci…), ali tada za biljku već može biti kasno. Plant-O-Meter uočava promene i pre nego što postanu vidljive, analizira i procenjuje koliko je biljka zdrava, odnosno kakva je sposobnost fotosinteze, da li postoji potreba za đubrenjem i navodnjavanjem. Uređaj emituje svetlost iz pažljivo odabranih delova spektra koja se reflektuje od biljke i za samo nekoliko sekundi pruža preciznu procenu njenog stanja. Podaci se putem bluetooth konekcije šalju pametnom telefonu sa kojim je uređaj povezan, preko kojeg se dalje prenose u informcioni sistem zajedno sa GPS lokacijom uzorka. Takođe, uređaj je napravljen tako da prikazuje rezultate merenja nezavisno od doba dana i vremenskih uslova.

Mastitis is the most common disease in dairy cattle, but also the most expensive disease for treatment. In the herd without proper animal control, almost 40% of cows suffer from mastitis and the analysis shows that mastitis damage is on average 200 € per animal and any progress in early detection of mastitis brings savings in M€s. Mastitis begins with bacterial infection through the teat duct and enters the cisternal area. The disease is mostly transmitted by contaminated hands or milking machines.
&nbsp;
We have developed a simple and inexpensive device for early detection of mastitis with a 70-80% accuracy, called FastMast, and it is based on the fact that in the early stage of mastitis, cells membrane is damaged inside the mammary gland, resulting in increased concentration of Na+ and Cl- ions in milk. It is aimed to small farmers and untrained people due to its low cost, simple handling, and maintenance.

Mastitis je najčešća bolest kod krava, ali i najskuplja bolest za lečenje. U stadu bez odgovarajuće kontrole životinja, skoro 40% krava pati od mastitisa i analize pokazuju da šteta koju prouzrokuje mastitis u proseku iznosi 200 € po životinji. Samim tim, svaki napredak u ranom otkrivanju mastitisa donosi uštede u M €. Mastitis počinje bakterijskom infekcijom kroz sisni kanal i ulazi u cisternalnu oblast. Na malim farmama, bolest se uglavnom prenosi kontaminiranim rukama, dok se u slučaju velikih farmi to dešava putem mašina za muženje.

Mi smo razvili jednostavan i jeftin uređaj za rano otkrivanje mastitisa sa tačnošću od 70-80%. Uređaj se zove FastMast (engl. Fast Mastitis) i koristi činjenicu da se u ranom stadijumu mastitisa u mlečnoj žlezdi oštećuje ćelijska membrana, što dovodi do povećane koncentracije Na+ i Cl- jona u mleku. Namenjen je malim poljoprivrednicima i neobučenim korisnicima zbog svoje niske cene, jednostavnog rukovanja i održavanja.

In order to improve insurance services in the field of agriculture and allow fast and transparent flow of information between the company and the client, detect accurate location of insured agricultural plots after the damage, allow reporting on the damage by the client and estimating damage by the insurance, BioSense is developing a multifunctional and innovative platform TERRA for insurance management in agriculture. The platform provides a new perspective within the insurance process.

DDOR TERRA

U cilju unapređenja osiguravajućih usluga u oblasti poljoprivrede, a u cilju brzog i transparentnog protoka informacija, tačne lokacije osiguranih poljoprivrednih parcela po nastanku štete, prijavom štete od strane klijenta kao i obračunom štete od strane osiguranja, BioSens je na zahtev DDOR-a pristupio razvoju multi funkcionalne i inovativne platforme TERRA za upravljanje osiguranjem u poljoprivredi, koja otvara sasvim novu perspektivu za digitalizaciju procesa osiguranja.

AgroSense

BioSense is a research and development institute and a centre of scientific excellence, which, besides increasing the quality and outreach of science, has a societal role to accelerate domestic industry. Centre for Product Development provides high-tech solutions for industry and government based on scientific results of the Institute. These solutions come from the fields of IoT, GIS and satellite technologies and they are boosting the competitiveness of domestic companies and efficiency of public administration, thus actively accelerating the digital transformation of Serbian and European agriculture.

Center for Product Development

The role of the Business Development Department (BDD) of BioSense Institute is to create a long-lasting value for the Institute based on the expansion and diversification of BioSense’s income base. The main goal of BDD is to constantly evolve and create new opportunities for successful business utilization of BioSense’s research results. In addition, the Department closely follows market trends, needs and opportunities, thus enabling transfer and application of skills and knowledge into research and innovation activities of the Center of Excellence (CoE).
&nbsp;
In order to achieve this ambitious goal, BDD focuses its efforts on the following core activities:
&#8211; strategic planning,
&#8211; business development,
&#8211; product management and
&#8211; capacity building.
&nbsp;
Within BDD internal and external analysis are performed by assessment and evaluation of various business aspects and opportunities for growth including, but not limited to different aspects of Intellectual Property rights and their utilization for business expansion.
&nbsp;
In parallel, BDD performs a technology watch, maps new business opportunities and project calls and establishes new partnerships in order to expand the current BioSense ecosystem and contribute towards income diversification of the Institute.
&nbsp;
BDD team excels in preparing new project proposals and winning new funding opportunities. Although the scope of such projects is different, all have the same aim – to foster BioSense Institute research centers, boost our scientific achievements as well as to upgrade the business capacity to support the growth and expansion. Currently, just the Department is involved in more than 18 international projects, being in charge of project management and implementation.
&nbsp;
The Department also provides dynamic and comprehensive portfolio of business trainings in order to enhance capacity building of Institute’s staff. It is especially focused on nurturing the entrepreneurial mindset of the Institute’s researchers and supporting them towards the commercialization of their research results.

During the course of H2020 ANTARES project (2017 – 2024), BDD will establish and operate a set of complementary value-added facilities (BioSense Accelerator, Digital Farm, Shared Research Facility and BioSense Regional) that will maximize the innovation potential of the new CoE. Through BioSense Accelerator, BDD aims to provide fundraising opportunities and offers unique mentoring program to a broad range of beneficiaries, such as SMEs, start-ups, regional research community, etc. At the same time, all activities and resources are put on disposal to all BioSense scientists, further providing the two-fold input to their research: (i) market trends and industrial advancements and (ii) encouragement to kick-start their own entrepreneurial journey.

BDD hosts two equally important directly market-oriented entities – Precision Agriculture Living Lab (focused on user-centric innovation and solution co-creation) and BioSense Digital Innovation Hub (bringing digital solutions to the broad farm-to-fork value chain by offering business, technical and ecosystem services to external stakeholders – meaning that external parties can receive support while developing their technical solution, by receiving business advice, or by being introduced to relevant partners and communities).

To overall aim of BDD is to secure the long-term sustainability of CoE and impact for the Serbian and European economy.

BioSense je istraživačko-razvojni institut i centar naučne izvrsnosti koji osim podizanja kvaliteta i dometa nauke, ima društvenu ulogu da da zamajac domaćoj privredi. Centar za razvoj proizvoda pruža visokotehnološka rešenja za privredu i državne ustanove koja se zasnivaju na naučnim rezultatima Instituta. Ova rešenja dolaze iz sfere IoT-a, GIS-a i satelitskih tehnologija i pospešuju konkurentnost domaćih kompanija i efikasnost javne uprave, čime se aktivno ubrzava digitalna transformacija srpske i evropske poljoprivrede.

Centar za razvoj proizvoda

Uloga Centra za inovacije i razvoj poslovanja (CIRP) Instituta BioSense je da stvori dugoročnu održivost Instituta, zasnovanu na proširenju i diverzifikaciji načina prihodovanja Instituta. Glavni cilj CIRP-a je da kontinuirano evoluira i pronalazi nove mogućnosti za uspešno implementiranje rezultata istraživanja BioSens-a u komercijalne vrhe. Pored toga, Odeljenje pomno prati aktuelne trendove i prepoznaje potrebe na tržištu, stvarajući na taj način nove mogućnosti za praktičnu primenu svih veština i znanja stečenih kroz istraživačke i inovacione aktivnosti Centra izvrsnosti (CI).

Da bi postigao svoje ambiciozne ciljeve, CIRP svoj fokus stavlja na sledeće osnovne aktivnosti:
&#8211;  strateško planiranje,
&#8211;  poslovni razvoj,
&#8211; upravljanje projektima i
&#8211; izgradnja kapaciteta.

CIRP vrši interne i eksterne analize, procenjujući i ocenjujući različite poslovne aspekte i mogućnosti rasta i proširenja poslovanja, uključujući i različite aspekte zaštite prava Intelektualne svojine kao važne faktore.

Paralelno, CIRP prati tehnološke trendove na tržištu, mapira nove poslovne mogućnosti i otvorene pozive za podnošenje projektih prijava i uspostavlja nova partnerstva u zemlji i inostranstvu, kako bi proširio trenutnu mrežu saradnika Instituta i doprineo diverzifikaciji prihoda.

CIRP tim se ističe u pripremi novih, uspešnih predloga projekata. Iako su ciljevi i obimi projekata veoma raznoliki, svi imaju jedan zajednički cilj &#8211; da konstantno podstiču istraživačke centre Instituta BioSens, podrže njihova naučna dostignuća i pomognu u ostvarivanju ciljeva na polju širenja i rasta poslovnih kapaciteta. Trenutno je CIRP odeljenje uključeno u više od 18 međunarodnih projekata, sa zaduženjem da njima upravlja i uspešno implementira projektne zadatke.

Odeljenje takođe pruža vrlo raznovrsne i sveobuhvatne obuke i treninge, kako bi pomoglo zaposlenima u Institutu u proširivanju ličnih kapaciteta i veština. Posebna pažnja posvećuje se negovanju preduzetničkog duha i načina razmišljanja kod istraživača Instituta, kroz pružanje podrške komercijalizaciji rezultata njihovih istraživanja.

Tokom projekta H2020 ANTARES (2017 &#8211; 2024), CIRP je osnovao i trenutno uspešno upravlja setom komplementarnih entiteta (BioSense akcelerator, Digitalna farma, Zajednicki prostor za laboratorijsko istatrazivanje i BioSense Regional) koji će maksimizirati inovacioni potencijal novog Centra Izvrsnosti. Kroz BioSense Akcelerator, CIRP ima za cilj da pruži različite mogućnosti za prikupljanje sredstava i nudi jedinstveni program mentorstva širokom krugu korisnika, kao što su mala i srednja preduzeća, novoosnovana preduzeća (“start-up”), regionalna istraživačka zajednica itd. Istovremeno, sve aktivnosti i resursi su stavljeni na raspolaganje svim naučnicima Instituta BioSens, pružajući dvostruki doprinos njihovim istraživanjima: (i) upoznavanje sa tržišnim trendovima i industrijskim dostignućima i (ii) podsticaj da započnu sopstveno preduzetničko putovanje.

Pod okriljem CIRP-a nalaze se dva podjednako važna, tržišno orijentisana entiteta &#8211; Precizna poljoprivredna živa laboratorija – Precision Agriculture Living Lab (fokusirana na korisničke inovacije i ko-kreiranje rešenja) i BioSense Digital Innovation Hub (koji daje inovativna digitalna rešenja u proizvodnom lancu “od farme do viljuške”, nudeći poslovnu, tehničku i sistemsku podršku spoljnim saradnicima &#8211; u vidu podrške prilikom razvijanja sopstvenih tehnoloških rešenja, davanja poslovnih saveta ili predstavljanja relevantnim partnerima i zajednicama).

Opšti cilj CIRP-a je da obezbedi dugoročnu održivost Centra Izvrsnosti (CI) i pozitivno utiče na srpsku i evropsku ekonomiju.

A method for controlling water quality in the simultaneous presence of bacteria, sludge and algae by a heuristic approach

The invention is based on the digitization and acceleration of the existing traditional method of farmers for estimating wheat yield by means of artificial intelligence algorithms. In addition to the algorithms, the invention also includes a new base for estimating yields that does not depend on weather conditions, soil type and wheat crop type.

The invention proposes a process which includes: detection of wheat ears, automatic counting of ears, and formation of a database for yield prediction in a new way and yield prediction which is done with new data.

The formation of the database for yield prediction consists of reference data of biomass and number of spikes, then the number of spikes obtained by automatic counting of spikes and new estimated biomass obtained by prediction. After forming the data for the prediction database, the prediction phase itself uses the new estimated biomass and the number of spikes to predict the yield. The prediction phase uses machine learning algorithms, and the prediction results are validated on actual harvest results and yield values by agricultural experiments, at the end of the same season.

A method for early prediction of wheat yield based on artificial intelligence

The invention relates to a planar electrode for biosensors realized using repetitive fractal geometry. The electrode itself consists of three electrodes of the biosensor, the mode of realization being chosen to be through repetitive geometry up to the level of the third order. The realization of the invention includes repetitive geometry of the 1st order of the Sierpine fractal, but the invention also relates to the repetitive geometry of the Koch curve, Pean curve and Hilbert curve, and of the geometric shapes includes the three most common shapes square, circle and triangle. Repetitive geometry is the basis of the innovation of the invention, because the change in the design of the planar electrode with its parameters, as well as the order of fractals, significantly contributes to the increased sensitivity of biosensors.

The present invention relates to software support for a device for detecting pollen particle types in air in real time. Software support is reflected in the classification of pollen particles in the air, in real time via neural network and this is the basic feature of the innovation of the invention. The classification includes the preparation of data for classification by analyzing 3 characteristics of the detected particles and after the preparation the classification takes place via a neural network. In the preparation of data, the spectrum of Mi&#8217;s scattering of pollen particles is analyzed, then the fluorescence spectrum and the duration of fluorescence, and then the neural network extracts the statistical characteristics of pollen particles and makes a universal classification.

Universal system and method for automatic classification of pollen particle types in air in real time

The present invention relates to the exact measurement of soil moisture which is of crucial importance in agriculture, since proper growth, development, and maintenance of the plants significantly depend on soil water content.

We have developed microwave soil moisture sensor based on phase shift method, which relies on the phase shift of a sinusoidal signal propagating along the sensor element which is heavily influenced by moisture content of the surrounding soil. The main advantages of the sensor originate from its operating principle and optimal operating frequency. Since the phase shift method measures phase and not the amplitude of the signal, the measurement results are more immune to the noise. By choosing optimal operating frequency in the microwave range, it is possible to neglect the influence of soil electrical conductivity. In this manner, it is achieved that the sensor is more independent from soil type in comparison to the state-of-the-art solutions and the need for its calibration is reduced.

The sensor is made of robust parts without consumable components, which enables its long-lasting operation with performances stable over time. Supporting electronics enables economical operation suitable for Internet of Things (IoT) concept, integration in wireless sensors networks as well as in systems for automatic irrigation.

The porous matrix within the sensor maintains hydrodynamic equilibrium with surrounding soil, thereby conveying a realistic state of the moisture content to the sensor element, and, at the same time, enabling excellent contact with the sensor element. By introduction of the relation between retention curve of the porous matrix and sensor output, it is possible the measure soil matric potential, which represents the best indicator of the water available to the plants. In addition, a temperature sensor is integrated within the soil moisture sensor leading to a hybrid solution offering measurement of three parameters, moisture, matric potential and temperature at the same time.

The present invention relates to a Plant-O-Meter, a device which enables the assessment of the physiological condition of plants, which is essential for the care and better development. The human eye can only notice certain changes on the plants (shriveled leaves, yellow and brown leaves, spots on the plant…), but then it may be too late for the plant. Plant-O-Meter notices changes even before they become visible, analyzes and evaluates how healthy the plant is, i.e. what is the ability of photosynthesis, whether there is a need for fertilization and irrigation. The device emits light from carefully selected parts of the spectrum that is reflected by the plant and provides a precise assessment of its condition in just a few seconds. The data is sent via a bluetooth connection to the smartphone to which the device is connected, through which it is further transferred to the information system together with the GPS location of the sample. Also, the device is designed to display measurement results regardless of the time of day and weather conditions.
