Project goal: The overall goal of the project is to strengthen the scientific, technological, and research management capacities of BIOS by advancing data-driven and participatory approaches to understanding ecosystem processes, delivering efficient spatial and socio-economic solutions to environmental challenges, and fostering the professional development of researchers and staff within an international research and innovation network.
About the project: SONATA is a three-year European research and capacity building project coordinated by the BioSense Institute (University of Novi Sad), aiming to strengthen the uptake of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in land-use planning and environmental decision-making through advanced data integration and digital technologies. The project addresses key societal and environmental challenges, including climate change, droughts, and land degradation, by integrating biodiversity, soil health, and land-use/land-cover (LULC) data. SONATA develops and applies innovative methodologies for habitat mapping, ecosystem monitoring, and ecosystem services assessment, leveraging big data, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and spatial analysis. A central element of SONATA is the Living Lab approach, which ensures early and continuous engagement of researchers, policymakers, planners, land managers, and local communities. This co-creation framework strengthens the science–policy–practice interface, enhances stakeholder capacities, and supports the effective implementation of NBS across sectors and scales.
BioSense role on the project: BioSense is the project coordinator and leads two work packages – WP5 and WP6.
Work Package 5 (WP5) – ensures the visibility and impact of the SONATA project through the implementation of effective communication, networking, dissemination, and sustainable collaboration activities.
Work Package 6 (WP6) – ensures the timely and high-quality delivery of project outputs, effective communication within the consortium, risk management, and the achievement of project objectives within the available resources.
